vinyl chloride leak in the United States

Feb. 14, 2023

[Global Network Report] A serious vinyl chloride leak in the United States has been hotly discussed recently.

According to American media reports such as CBS, CNN and Capitol Hill, the cause of the incident can be

traced back to a train derailment in the state at the beginning of this month. In order to avoid the explosion,

rescue workers released the toxic chemical vinyl chloride in the train, and local residents also temporarily evacuated.

However, considering the seriousness of the leak, some Twitter users thought that the United States did not pay

much attention to it, and even questioned why they were still paying attention to the "balloon" incident.

AFP and CNN previously reported that on February 4 local time, US officials confirmed that a freight train

derailed in Ohio on the evening of the 3rd, causing a fire and causing a small amount of dangerous chemical

vinyl chloride leakage. Earlier on the 4th, an official of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)

said that some of the cars of the derailed train released some vinyl chloride through the safety release valve.

However, vinyl chloride is a colorless gas and has been identified as a carcinogen by the National Cancer Institute

of the United States.CNN said in the latest report on the 13th that the evacuation order for residents of East Palestinian City, Ohio, was

officially lifted on the 8th after the local air and water were monitored in real time and no pollutants were found to

exceed the standard. However, some residents still did not return to their homes due to concerns about long-term

environmental risks. According to the report, the fish and frogs in the local stream have died. Some people published

photos of dead animals on social media, including chickens, dogs, foxes, and others said they smelled the smell of

chemicals in the town.

According to the Associated Press on the 10th, after the serious leak, Ohio Governor Mike Devan held a

press conference in the eastern Palestinian city of the state on the 8th. Lambert, a reporter from "News Nation",

clashed with the law enforcement police on the spot during the live coverage, and was then forcibly taken away and

arrested because of his "illegal invasion (the scene of the conference)". After being detained for about 5 hours, he

was released on bail. Some American media mentioned that the reporter was of African descent, and the related

incident also caused controversy among netizens.

Under the tweet of the Associated Press report, some netizens questioned, "What are they hiding?" "What?"

"There are many outstanding questions about the train derailment in Ohio. Now the reporters have been arrested.

The really bad things are happening... Don't be distracted by unintentional questions.
